This is a rare disease but one that has poor prognosis if not identified at an early stage. There are lifestyle factors which might increase the risk of developing mouth cancer;
- Getting older increases the risk, especially 40+ years
- Smoking
- Alcohol
- Genetics. Having a relative that has suffered with mouth cancer may put you at an increased risk
Mouth cancer can occur at any site in the mouth. Look out for red patches, white patches or mouth ulcers. However,be aware that these can occur quite commonly, will last for 7-10 days and do not mean you have mouth cancer, so please don’t become paranoid! However, if red or white patches or mouth ulcers last for 3 weeks you should let us examine your mouth so that we can reassure you.
At Dental World we routinely examine the soft tissues of your mouth at each examination appointment to give you complete peace of mind.
